DETECTOR

This work-in-progress is due to be installed in the Met Office main building later this year. A large sheet of brass is struck each time a cosmic ray passes through the Geiger counter mounted near its surface. The microphone amplifies the deep resonant tones that result.

Projected onto the surface of the sheet is the followingtext:

Galactic cosmic rays continually pass through you from all angles like flying sparks or rain, going through your body and through the earth, emerging from the other side to continue their invisible journey across the universe.

Each sound from this panel has been triggered by a cosmic ray during its immense journey through space, through the panel and through you, taking a tiny part of you with it as it continues on its journey towards infinity.
