BIG RHYTHM Series

Each multi-media picture was produced in my studio using processes involving sun-shadow prints, oil-bar, pigment and acrylic paint. Cyanotypes and Gum Bichromates are early photographic processes which fix mysterious shadow images onto paper, wood or canvas. They involve coating the material with natural salts and then placing a 'negative' (black & white 'old school' photographic negative or solid object) on them. This is left outside in the sun to develop a shadow picture, and then washed in water to fix the image. Cyanotypes produce a beautiful blue and white image, Gum Bichromates can contain any pigment required.

In some cases, the shadow picture is then placed within a Sunshine Recorder to produce Heliograph sunshine arcs which are then gilded. Each work in the series is either A1 or A2 size (approx. 45cm x 60cm – 60cm x 85cm – other sizes are available), mounted and framed. The original images are either on high-quality watercolour paper, board or wood laminates, with the frames made from oak or ash.

This series is based upon linking the immense on-going rhythms produced by the sun and the seasons to musical rhythms generated in a more intimate and personal way through the playing of musical instruments. Other works in the series link scientific theories such as 'Big Bang' and the formation of galaxies to images produced by our nearest star – the sun.
